I firmly believe that part of my job is to improve my community and society at large. I believe that an academic community is stronger when a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives are represented. I believe that all people should have the opportunity to participate in, contribute to, and enhance the computer science community independent of their race, their gender, their socioeconomic status, the country of their birth, their physical ability, or anything else.
To this end, I participate in several types of activities.
- Mentoring: In addition to my own PhD student advisees, I mentor (formally and informally) many fantastic students.
- Representation and Inclusivity: I am involved in other efforts aimed at making computer science more inclusive to all—both by increasing numbers and also by improving the environment. Some specific efforts target: women in computer science, the queer community in TCS, fighting anti-Black racism.
- Research: I use my research to try and improve societal good, and I give talks and organize initiatives aimed as disseminating research on these topics.
Some of my recent initiatives:
- Queer in TCS: a dedicated space to share opportunities, ideas, whatever with those of all genders and sexualities in TCS.
- My blog: aimed at demystifying the academic career.
- Women in TCS Profiles: because there are more than 3 women in TCS, and now you have no excuse for not inviting women as speakers or to your workshop.
- The EconCS twitter account: tweets on new arXiv preprints tagged with cs.GT as well as EconCS blog posts.
Program Committees: I am serving or have served on the program committees for the follow conferences and workshops.
